A Surge protection device protects electrical and electronic devices from high voltage peaks which are commonly caused by lightning strikes and switching operations. At time of writing, it is a recommendation within the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations that SPDs are installed where you need to protect expensive electrical and electronic equipment.
